Objective To evaluate ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) for assessment of mechanical bone quality, an ex vivo comparison of different bone types measured with UTV, 2-dimensional (2D) histomorphometry and with 3-dimensional (3D) radiology (cone-beam computerized tomography [CBCT], computerized microtomography [μCT]) was conducted. We demonstrate a method to fabricate narrow, down to a few micron wide metallic leads on top of a three-dimensional colloidal crystal self-assembled from polystyrene (PS) nanospheres of diameter 260 nm, using electron-beam lithography. This fabrication is not straightforward due to the fact that PS nanospheres cannot usually survive the harsh chemical treatments required in the development and lift-off steps of electron-beam lithography. The electrical properties, electroluminescence (EL) power output and deep trap spectra were studied before and after 5 MeV electron irradiation of near-UV single-quantum-well (SQW) light-emitting diodes (LED) structures differing by the presence or absence of InAlN superlattice underlayers (InAlN SL UL). The presence of the underlayer is found to remarkably increase the EL output power and the radiation tolerance of LEDs, which correlates with a much lower and more slowly changing density of deep traps in the QW region with radiation dose, and the higher lifetime of charge carriers, manifested by higher short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage in current–voltage characteristics under …

Multipass amplifiers with self-compensation of the thermal lens

We present a novel architecture for a multi-pass amplifier based on a succession of optical Fourier transforms and short propagations that shows a superior stability for variations of the thermal lens compared to state-of-the-art 4f-based amplifiers. We found that the proposed multi-pass amplifier is robust to variations of the active medium dioptric power. The superiority of the proposed architecture is demonstrated by analyzing the variations of the size and divergence of the output beam in form of a Taylor expansion around the design value for variations of the thermal lens in the active medium. Sensing properties of assembled Bi2S3nanowire arrays

Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanowires were grown in porous aluminium oxide template and a selective chemical etching was applied to transfer the nanowires to a solution. Well aligned nanowire arrays were assembled on pre-patterned silicon substrates employing dielectrophoresis. Electron beam lithography was used to connect aligned individual nanowires to the common macroelectrode. In order to evaluate the conductometric sensing performance of the Bi2S3 nanowires, current–voltage characteristics were measured at different relative humidity (RH) levels (5–80%) / argon medium. Surface pattern recording in Sb2Se3 thin films

Abstract Results on the modification of Sb 2 Se 3 thin film surface topology by irradiation followed by wet-etching are given. Comparison of study results revealed the possible role of purely electronic and thermal processes in the relief formation. The latter is supposed to be connected with radiation-induced defect creation, free volume increase under the increased fluidity conditions as well as with the possible additional influence of electrostatic forces and stress. Changes in surface characteristics are presented and potential applications of this treatment are discussed.
